KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—Virginia sophomore diver JB Kolod broke the school record on the 3-meter springboard as the Cavalier divers finished competition at the Tennessee Diving Invitational Saturday (Jan. 5) at Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville.
“Overall, I think it was a real positive weekend,” UVa diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “It gives us a good idea of what we need to focus on to be where we need to be for the ACC and NCAA Championships. JB (Kolod) and Becca (Corbett) each had two solid performances. This is the most competitive meet in the country outside of NCAAs. For them to both final on two boards is pretty special.”
Kolod broke the 3m school mark in the prelims on Friday with a score of 386.15, the second-highest overall mark. In the finals, Kolod earned fifth-place with a score of 358.05. Freshman Carl Buergler had previously broke the record earlier this season with a score of 377.85 against Navy.
“JB looked great this weekend as we go forward towards the championship part of our season,” MacDonald said. “Throughout this weekend he beat numerous All-Americans and went toe-to-toe with a U.S. Olympic bronze medalist (Nick McCrory).”
On the men’s 1-meter springboards on Thursday, Kolod finished fifth, with a score of 316.40, missing third place by a half of a point. Shinholser was 19th (267.95), while Sacks (250.70) and Buergler (246.70) were 29th and 30th, respectively.
In Saturday’s men’s platform final, Shinholser was the top Cavalier with a 14th-place finish with 280.80 points, while Buergler earned 16th (272.70) and Kolod was 17th (272.05). Sacks placed 22nd with 228.40 points.
Freshman Becca Corbett finished seventh on the platform on Saturday with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 229.90. Sophomore Laura Gartrell (164.80), freshman Katie Warburg (162.30) and junior Kelly Lloyd (155.25) placed 25th, 26th and 27th, respectively.
In the women’s 1m on Friday, Corbett qualified for the finals and finished 12th with a score of (241.50). Corbett was ninth after the prelims with a mark of 261.55.
Freshman Katie Warburg placed 22nd (238.10) and sophomore Laura Gartrell earned 31st (222.30), while juniors Kelly Lloyd and Carlin Tettelbach were 38th (215.05) and 46th (195.55), respectively. Both Corbett and Warburg finished ahead of all other ACC divers in the event, including student-athletes from Clemson, Duke and North Carolina.
Warburg was the top UVa finisher in the women’s 3m on Thursday, placing 19th (250.25). Corbett was 27th (236.00), while Lloyd (217.00), Tettelbach (209.90) and Gartrell (209.40) were 35th through 37th.
“We started off the weekend really strong with JB leading the way with an outstanding performance and Katie finishing the highest out of all the ACC divers,” MacDonald said.
The entire Virginia swimming and diving program will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 19 against North Carolina.
