CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams had 10 student-athletes named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic team, according to the conference's announcement today (April 19).
The women led the conference, along with NC State and Louisville, with seven student-athletes. Seniors Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.), Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.), Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), junior Jennifer Marrkand (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Vivian Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa.) earned the honor for the Cavalier women.
Jones was one of three female student-athletes to be recognized to the academic team for a fourth year. Rauth, Smith and Thomas were three-time honorees, while Tafuto notched the honor for the second time.
Jones concluded the year as a five-time All-American, placing fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and fifth with the 800-yard freestyle relay team for first-team All-America honors. She was named to the honorable mentions team in the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay.
Smith, a five-time All-America honoree, notched first-team honors in the in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 1650-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay, while earning honorable mentions in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Simon and Marrkand were named three-time All-Americans during the season with Simon placing on the first-team once and Marrkand twice.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
