INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Former Virginia swimming standout and UVa volunteer assistant coach Matt McLean qualified for the 2013 FINA World Championships U.S. squad Wednesday (June 26) at the U.S. National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Ind.
McLean made the team by way of a third-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle and will swim as part of the U.S. 4x200m freestyle relay at the World Championships, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain, July 28-August 4. McLean posted a time of 1:46.78, behind Ryan Lochte (1:45.97) and Conor Dwyer (1:46.25).
McLean will look for his fifth international gold medal in Barcelona. The Sterling, Va., native graduated with a degree in sociology and is one of UVa's most decorated student-athletes. McLean won the 2011 NCAA Championship in the 500-yard freestyle and was a 15-time All-American at UVa. A 17-time Atlantic Coast Conference Champion, McLean was the ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
