LANDOVER, Md. - The Virginia track and field teams opened the 2013 indoor season on Saturday by competing at the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. The Cavaliers won four events at the meet, which featured athletes from over 20 schools.

"It was the first meet of the year, so we saw some positives and some things we need to work on," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "We didn't bring our whole team, primarily just the sprints and jumps, but the kids we brought were able to use some of the techniques they had been working on in practice. We got a lot out of this meet, but also realize we have a lot of work ahead too."

Virginia won both 600m races, with junior Natalia Kuhn (Virginia Beach, Va.) taking the women's race in a time of 1:35.88, and sophomore Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) winning the men's race in a time of 1:12.07. The Cavaliers also swept the triple jump titles, with sophomore Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) winning the men's triple jump with indoor personal best of 15.04m, and senior Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas) winning the women's triple jump at 12.47m.

Other top men's performers included junior Ozzie Bryan (Philadelphia, Pa.) was second in the 300m at 35.93. Freshman Adam Cummings (Kingston, Jamaica) was the top collegian and second overall in the 60m at 6.86, setting a freshman school record. Cavaliers finished second and third, the top two collegians, in the pole vault with senior Matt Armentrout (Glen Allen, Va.) at 4.35m, and sophomore Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) at 4.20m.

On the women's side, sophomore Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) finished second in the 60m with a time of 7.65. In the high jump, senior Pearl Bickersteth (Dumfries, Va.) was second with a jump of 1.77m.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Feb. 2 at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup in University Park, Pa.
