Cavaliers Record Three National Titles

July 9, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– Competing in national championships for their home countries, former Virginia athletes Filip Mihaljevic (Class of 2017) and Jordan Young (Class of 2017) and rising junior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) captured first-place finishes over the weekend (July 8-9).

Two Cavaliers captured national titles in the discus. Mihaljevic finished first at the Croatian Individual Championships with a mark of 62.29m, while Young captured the Canadian National title with a distance of 62.76m.

At the Icelandic National Championships, Jonsson placed first in the hammer. He recorded a mark of 65.85m.

“It is great to see our men continue their success into the summer,” head coach Bryan Fetzer said. “Any time you are crowned the best in your country it’s something special. I love how they are representing the Wahoo Nation around the world.”

Mihaljevic also captured a second-place finish, recording a mark of 20.42m in the shot put. Young finished third in the hammer with an effort of 65.85m.

“All of our guys did fantastic at their national championships,” assistant coach Martin Maric said. “They continue to show that they are not just some of the best throwers in the NCAA, but on the world stage as well. Winning national titles in their home countries is not an easy thing, and to see them do it is really impressive.”
