CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–  The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., on Friday (Oct. 13) at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. 

The Cavaliers will compete in the championship races with the women’s 6,0000-meter competition beginning at 1:20 p.m. and the men’s 8,000-meter race starting at 2 p.m. (EST).

The UVA men are ranked 18th and the women are ranked 28th in the latest polls from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Friday’s meet features some of the best programs in the country as 16 out of 30 teams hold national rankings in the women’s field, while the men’s race features 20 ranked teams in a field of 35. 

In the women’s 6k, five teams hold national rankings inside the top 10. New Mexico, which is ranked third, is the top-ranked team in the event followed by No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 San Francisco, No. 7 NC State and No. 8 Providence.

Additionally, three teams have won recent NCAA titles with New Mexico capturing the NCAA championship in 2015, while Michigan State won in 2014 and Providence won in 2013. 

The men’s field features five ranked teams inside the top-10 including the nation’s top-ranked program and defending NCAA champion, Northern Arizona. Additionally, the Cavaliers will face No. 3 Syracuse, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Southern Utah and No. 10 Furman. 

UVA heads into the meet after sweeping the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 23. The women’s team topped Yale, currently ranked 27th, as senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) and graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) placed second and third overall, respectively. Senior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led the men’s team with a fifth-place finish.      

The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational will be the last regular season meet for the Cavaliers. UVA will compete at the ACC Championships in Louisville, Ky. on Oct. 27.
