The summer baseball season has wrapped up for members of the Virginia baseball team, and three Cavaliers won summer championships with their teams. John LaPrise and Joe McCarthy each were key contributors for the Northwoods League champion Madison Mallards, while Nathan Kirby pitched for the New England Collegiate Baseball League champion Keene Swamp Bats.
LaPrise was the Northwoods League's batting champion with a .407 average, 40 points better than the second-best average. He also was named to the league's postseason all-star team.
McCarthy hit .303 during the regular season but turned things up in the playoffs, where he batted .524 (11-for-21) and drove in 11 runs in five games. After going 5-for-6 with four runs, four RBI, two doubles and a home run in the clinching Game 2 of the championship series, McCarthy was named the Summer Collegiate World Series MVP. He was 7-for-11 in the series.
Kirby earned the win in the deciding game of the NECBL championship series, firing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The performance capped off a great summer for Kirby, who went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 43 innings during the regular season.
All five Cavaliers who competed in the Cape Cod League reached the playoffs with their respective teams, including Josh Sborz, whose Orleans Firebirds advanced to the championship series. Derek Fisher finished fifth in the Cape Cod League with a .333 batting average.
Thomas Woodruff was named an all-star in the Cal Ripken League. Playing for the Herndon Braves, Woodruff batted .285 and knocked in a dozen runs.
