CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia senior captains Oday Aboushi and Steve Greer have accepted invitations to play in postseason all-star games. Aboushi, UVa's starting left tackle, was an early invitee to the Senior Bowl. Greer, UVa's starting inside linebacker, has accepted an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game and will play on the West team.
The East-West Shrine Game will be held Jan. 19 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., kicking off at 4 p.m. EST and televised live on the NFL Network. The game benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Senior Bowl will be held Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., kicking off at 3 p.m. CST and televised live on the NFL Network. The NFL Network will also televise all practices.
Aboushi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned an early selection to the 2013 Senior Bowl roster, an honor as one of the top players in the country at his position. Aboushi, a first-team All-ACC honoree, graded out over 90 percent in all 12 games, including 97 percent against Miami and 94 percent against Penn State - UVa's two come-from-behind victories that included game-winning TD drives in the closing minutes. He averaged 10+ knockdown blocks per game. A second-team All-ACC pick in 2011, Aboushi was also named the Touchdown Club of Richmond's Offensive Lineman of the Year.
This is the fifth-straight season a Cavalier will represent UVa in the Senior Bowl. In 2012 Cam Johnson and Chase Minnifield were invited to the event. Minnifield sat out the contest with an injury. In 2011 Danny Aiken and Ras-I Dowling were selected to play in the event. In 2010 Chris Cook and Rashawn Jackson participated in the showcase, while Cedric Peerman, John Phillips and Clint Sintim appeared in the 2009 game.
Greer (Solon, Ohio) finished the year No. 2 in the ACC this year with 122 tackles and his 376 career tackles ranks No. 6 all-time at UVa. The senior ranks No. 1 among active ACC players in career tackles and Notre Dame's Manti Te'o was the only active BCS player with more career tackles when the regular season concluded. Greer was twice named ACC Linebacker of the Week in 2012, following a 15-tackle performance against Penn State and a career-high 19-tackle game at Virginia Tech. Greer was named a second-team honoree in 2011 and an honorable-mention honoree in 2009. Greer was a finalist for the Dudley Award and for the second year in a row named the Touchdown Club of Richmond's Linebacker of the Year.
This is the second year in a row a Cavalier will play in the East-West-Shrine Game. Matt Conrath and Rodney McLeod participated in the 2012 game.
