Sugar Grove, Ill. - The Virginia men's golf team finished second Sunday at the 15-team Northern Intercollegiate to open its fall season. The Cavaliers completed play at 3-over 867, just one shot behind tournament champion UCF. The Golden Knights posted the day's best final round score, shooting 5-under 283, to capture the title. Virginia closed out play with score of 1-under 287.
Virginia had three players turn in top-10 finishes. Junior Denny McCarthy led the Cavaliers with a fourth-place effort, shooting 2-under 214. He shot 1-under 71 during the final round. Junior Ji Soo Park matched McCarthy's final-round score and moved up to ninth overall at 1-over 217. Freshman Jimmy Stanger, making his collegiate debut, also finished ninth. He posted a final round score of 73.
McCarthy's finish marked the eighth time during his career he recorded a top-10 finish. Last year he was the medalist at the tournament.
Houston's Roman Robledo took home medalist honors at 5-under 211.
The Cavaliers return to play Sept. 20-22 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the Dick's Sporting Goods Intercollegiate.
