CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's tennis team began play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (25-0) needed less than two hours to dispatch of the Knights (9-8) and set up a second round matchup with Minnesota on Saturday.
"I was pleased with how we played and it always nice to get the first match out of the way," said head coach Brian Boland. "The guys have worked hard over the last couple of weeks to prepare for this tournament. The first match is always tough because it is natural to have a bit of a slow start. Give Fairleigh Dickinson a lot of credit, I thought they competed better than last year (when we played them in the first round). They were more prepared and that is a credit to the hard work of their players and coaches have put in over the last year."
The Cavaliers opened the match by winning the doubles point. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) got Virginia started with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Mark Hemy and Peter Skvarka. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Mac Styslinger(Birmingham, Ala.) clinched the point with their 8-4 win victory over Arvid Berzins and Ibrahim Shams at No. 1.
Virginia clinched the match with three quick singles victories. Julen Uriguen(Guatemala City, Guatemala) was first off the courts with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Markus Sjoberg at No. 6. Seconds later, Domijan made the score 3-0 by completing a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Shams. Styslinger posted the Cavaliers' fourth point of the afternoon with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hemy at the No. 4 position.
"I thought we did a good of focusing throughout the match," said Domijan. "It is easy to let your mind wander a little bit, especially if you win an easy first set. After the lull since ACCs, with having finals, I thought was important to get back on the courts and have a good performance. We all did that today."
In the first match of the day at the Snyder Tennis Center, Minnesota edged VCU 4-3 in a battle that took over four hours to complete.
"I actually grew up as a Gopher fan, so it is interesting to play them in the next round," said Boland, a native of Minnesota. "It was great for them to upset VCU and they really showed their toughness to pull out that match. We know we have to be ready for a tough match tomorrow."
The Virginia-Minnesota second round match is scheduled for 3 p.m. It is the final match of a NCAA tennis tripleheader scheduled for the Snyder Tennis Center. The women's regional begins at 9 a.m. with Texas playing William & Mary. The Virginia women follow with a first round match against Fairleigh Dickinson at noon, prior to the men's second round match.
