CHENNAI, India - Former Virginia men's tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) started the 2013 season strong as numerous Cavalier alumni began their new season on the ATP Tour. Devvarman has advanced in both singles and doubles at the Aircel Chennai Open, a ATP 250 event in his hometown.

The wins are Devvarman's first tour-level victories in over a year after missing most of the 2012 season due to injury. In singles, Devvarman topped Jan Hajak of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. He will meet top-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, the world No. 6, in the second round on Thursday.

Devvarman also teammed with Ukranian Sergiy Stakhovsky in doubles, downing the Dutch pair of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

Devvarman wasn't the only Cavalier in action in Chennai, as Sanam Singh (Class of 2011) and Ted Angelinos (Class of 2008) competed in singles qualifying. Singh also competed in main draw doubles, as he and countryman Vishnu Vardhan fell in the first round.

In Doha, at the ATP 250 Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the team of Treat Huey (Class of 2008) and Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009) upset top-seeded Robert Lindstedt and Nenad Zimjonic 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before being edged 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8 in the quarterfinals by Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
