LAS VEGAS—The 17th-ranked Virginia wrestling team placed seventh as action concluded at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Jedd Moore was the runner-up at 157 pounds, while Nick Sulzer was third at 165 and George DiCamillo was fifth at 133.
Virginia finished with 64.5 points, behind champion Ohio State (124.5), Missouri (123.5), Cornell (104.5), Oregon State (98.5), Nebraska (89.5) and Boise State (76).
“All in all, with three starters out, to finish in the top-seven at arguably the toughest tournament in the country, we’re really happy with our performance,” head coach Steve Garland said. “Jedd wrestled amazing, beating the No. 1 seed on the way to get to the finals and we’re really excited for him; he wrestled fantastic.”
“Nick rebounded well, beating two kids in Taylor Mass from Michigan and Zach Toal, the Big 12 Champion from Missouri, to take third and George pinned his guy for fifth. We have a lot of work to do, but we got a lot out of this tournament and it was a good experience overall.”
Seeded ninth at 157 pounds, Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) defeated Gabe Martinez of Air Force, 9-1, to advance to the finals. In the finals, third-seeded Roger Pena of Oregon State, defeated Moore, 9-7.
Seeded sixth in the field, DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio) dropped a 5-3 decision in the semifinals to second-seeded Nathan McCormick of Missouri. In the wrestlebacks, DiCamillo lost 12-5 to Levi Wolfensperger, the No. 8 seed out of Northern Iowa, before picking up a fall in 59 seconds over Ian Nickell of Cal State-Bakersfield to earn fifth place.
Seeded third at 165, Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio) was defeated in the semifinals, 1-0, by second-seeded and eighth-ranked Steven Monk of North Dakota State, before recording a 5-3 decision over Taylor Massa of Michigan to earn a spot in the match for third place. In the third-place match, Sulzer defeated Zach Toal of Missouri, 5-2.
Valenti dropped a close 2-1 decision to 10th-seeded Daniel Young of Army, while Fausey lost 6-5 to fifth-seeded Todd Porter of Missouri.
Virginia next wrestles as a team on Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga.
