On Saturday, June 29, the Virginia women's basketball team volunteered to help work on a Habitat for Humanity building project in Charlottesville.

All 12 members of the team, including first-years Breyana Mason, Tiffany Suarez, Amanda Fioravanti and Sydney Umeri, met at John Paul Jones Arena at 7:15 a.m. to head out to the construction site.

The team joined professional construction crews and contractors as well as Habitat for Humanity staff and partner families in working on the Sunrise Park project in the Belmont community. Site work at Sunrise Park began in fall 2010, and building started in March 2011 with several of the units fully completed and already inhabited.

Most of the team worked on sodding the front and back lawns of three of the newly or soon-to-be completed homes. Several other players worked on fine-tuning the interior of one of the almost-completed homes, including removing spackling from windows, cleaning tub surfaces and brushing up paint on inside trim.

"I am proud that our players volunteered to give up a free Saturday during summer session to help out this worthy cause," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "They were all very excited to be able to go out and lend their time, talents and strength for something that will really make a difference for people in Belmont."

Working together, the team managed to get the yard areas prepped with topsoil and the sod rolled out and installed before 3 p.m. in the afternoon. Click on the picture below to see a photo gallery from the project.
