CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia women's basketball team (1-1) closes out the current homestand by hosting Louisiana Tech (0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
Virginia evened its record to 1-1 with a 73-54 victory over High Point on Monday night. After being outrebounded by 23 in the opener at James Madison, Virginia dominated the boards with a +27 (57-30) rebound differential against High Point. After scoring eight second-chance points on 11 offensive rebounds at JMU, the Cavaliers capitalized on 23 offensive rebounds by scoring 26 second-chance points against the Panthers.
Junior center Sarah Imovbioh (Abuja, Nigeria) had 15 of Virginia's rebounds, including nine O-boards. Imovbioh logged her sixth career double-double and the first of the season for a UVa player by scoring 14 points.
Sophomore guard Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.) followed up her 18-point performance at James Madison by matching her career high with 19 points in the victory over High Point. Randolph, who averaged 5.0 points per game overall last season, closed out the 2012-13 campaign by scoring 19 points against Florida State and 15 in the ACC Tournament against Boston College.
Randolph and Imovbioh have been having tremendous success at the free throw line this season. Randolph is shooting 85.7 percent, making 18 free throws on 21 attempts through the first two games of the season. Imovbioh, helped by an 8-of-9 performance against High Point, is making 84.6 percent of her attempts.
The Lady Techsters opened the season by falling 68-45 at No. 21 South Carolina. Freshman guard JaQuan Jackson scored 13 points in her collegiate debut. Tech, playing shorthanded with only eight players dressing for the game, shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field but hit only 5-of-14 free throws. South Carolina outrebounded Tech 47-29, including 22 offensive rebounds.
This will be the first meeting between LA Tech and UVa since 2008 when the Cavaliers earned a 65-52 victory in Charlottesville during the Cavalier Classic Tournament. Virginia leads the all-time series, 3-2, including a 2-0 home record.
This will be the last home game in the month of November for the Cavaliers. On Tuesday, Nov. 18, Virginia will play at Liberty in a 7 p.m. game that will be televised on the Liberty Flames Sports Network as well as being streamed live online on ESPN3. The Cavaliers will then go to Morgantown, W.V. where they will take on West Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. The Cavaliers will celebrate Thanksgiving in the Bahamas, playing in the Junkanoo Jam against Tennessee on Nov. 28 and either Kansas State or SMU on Nov. 29.
