NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team earned its second victory of the season over a top-10-ranked team, defeating No. 8 Old Dominion, 5-3, Sunday (Sept. 8) in Norfolk, Va.
Freshman Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) followed up her three-goal performance in the victory at Yale on Friday (Sept. 6) with her second career hat trick, scoring three goals, including the game-winner, against the Monarchs. Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) scored the other two goals and also logged her second defensive save of the season.
"Elly and Caleigh are doing a great job of putting themselves in front of the goal and in a position to score," head coach Michele Madison said. "The attack mids and defensive mids are getting the ball on goal and Caleigh is just eating it up. It is a total team effort. I tell them that it takes six points to make a goal and six mistakes to get scored on."
Virginia took a 3-0 lead after scoring three goals in a span of 1:38, beginning with a Foust tap in of a rebound off the ODU goalie's pads 4:48 into the game. Buckley followed with a goal at 6:18 and another at 6:25 to spot UVa to a three-goal lead. The Monarchs scored two goals to close out the second half , making it a 3-2 game at the break.
Foust cleaned up another deflection off the goalie's pads four minutes into the second half to increase the UVa advantage to 4-2. The Monarchs scored with five minutes left in the game, but an empty-net score by Foust with just over a minute remaining sealed the victory for the Cavaliers.
"Old Dominion is a very talented team, so I am very pleased with today's outcome," said Madison. "To be on the road and to come away with two wins in two different situations, especially with a lot of traveling, is good. The team really did what they needed to do to stay hydrated and stay rested through all of that traveling."
With the victory, Virginia improved to 4-0 on the season with Old Dominion falling to 1-3. The win over No. 8 Old Dominion was the Cavaliers' second top-10 victory of the season as UVa defeated No. 6 Penn State, 4-2, last Sunday (Sept. 1).
The Cavaliers return home on Wednesday, Sept. 11 for a 6 p.m. midweek contest against Richmond. Admission is free for all regular-season home games played at Turf Field.
