CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team (4-0) returns home for a midweek contest, hosting Richmond (0-3) on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at Turf Field.
The Cavaliers begin their three-game week as one of 12 remaining unbeaten teams in the country. After the Richmond contest, Virginia will travel to Vermont, playing a pair of contests in the Sheraton Catamount Classic in Burlington. UVa will open the tournament against Maine (2-3) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m., before finishing off against host Vermont (0-4) on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m.
Virginia moved up to No. 5 in the first Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll of the season after being ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll. Virginia also received one first-place vote.
Virginia's 4-0 start is the fourth time in the last six seasons the Cavaliers have logged victories in the first four games of the season. The 2010 squad won its first nine games, while the 2011 team started 11-0.
The Cavaliers as a team are ranked in the top-10 in scoring margin (9th, 2.5), goals per game (7th, 4.5) points per game (7th, 12.5), assists per game (6th, 3.5) and defensive saves (4th, 3).
Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) is averaging 4.0 points per game, which ranks her second in the nation. She also is tied for second in goals per game with, among others, freshman Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) at 1.75 per contest. Foust logged back-to-back hat tricks in last weekend's victories at Yale and then-No. 8 Old Dominion. Buckley and Foust have scored seven goals apiece. Buckley leads the team with 16 points with Foust right behind at 12.
In addition to her offensive output, Buckley has also logged a pair of defensive saves, including stopping a shot at Old Dominion on Sunday. Buckley now has seven defensive saves in her career, tying her for sixth place in the Virginia record book.
Buckley and Foust have each earned ACC Player of the Week honors this season with Buckley earning the first week's honor and Foust earning this week's accolade.
Senior Carissa Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) ranks sixth in the nation with 1.0 assists per game. Vittese set up three goals last week, earning two assists at Yale and one at Old Dominion.
Richmond comes into the game with an 0-3 record, but has lost all three games by a one-goal margin, including a pair of overtime losses. Emma Johansson leads the squad with two goals. Goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski has a 2.22 goals-against average and a .588 save percentage.
