The 15th-ranked Virginia women's golf team is in ninth place following the opening round of the Sun Trust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The Cavaliers shot 17-over 297 and trail tournament-leading Oklahoma by 12 shots.
Virginia was led by junior Portland Rosen, who is tied for the individual lead after 18 holes, at 2-under 68. She had two birdies and 16 pars during her round and was one of just six players in the 78-golfer field to break par. She shares the lead with Alabama's Stephanie Meadow.
UVa's other scores included a 3-over 73 by Brittany Altomare, a 76 by Briana Mao, an 80 by Elizabeth Brightwell and an 82 by Kaira Martin. Altomare is in 20th place, Mao is 39th, Brightwell is 65th and Martin is 76th.
The second round of the tournament will be played Saturday with the final round contested Sunday. The 15-team field features nine teams ranked in the current Golfstat top-50.
