Charlottesville, Va. - The 13th-ranked Virginia women's golf team plays in the 25th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C. at the historic Sedgefield Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition per day at the par-71, 6,210-yard course that once hosted the Greater Greensboro Open and is the current site of the PGA's Wyndham Championship. It is also the site of the founding of the conference. This marks the fifth consecutive year the ACC Championships have been held at Sedgefield Country Club.
The Cavaliers are paired with NC State and Florida State during Friday's opening round and tee off starting at 9:20 a.m. Boston College, Maryland and Miami open play at 8:30 a.m. while North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest tee off at 10:10 a.m.
Duke, the 2012 champions, has dominated the championship winning all but three titles since 1996. The Blue Devils own a total of 17 ACC titles while Wake Forest has claimed five and North Carolina two.
The Blue Devils shot 875 to win last year's title by 10 strokes over runner-up North Carolina. Virginia was fifth at 903. Duke's Lindy Duncan took medalist honors by six shots at 3-under 210. UVa's top finisher was Briana Mao in 11th place at 224.
Virginia's lineup for the 2013 event will include Mao, Brittany Altomare, Elizabeth Brightwell, Nicole Anello and Portland Rosen. All five players have played in the event during their careers and Mao, Altomare, Brightwell and Rosen were in UVa's lineup last season.
Altomare leads UVa with a 72.29 stroke average, which is second among ACC competitors. She is ranked No. 13 in the latest Golfweek individual standings and No. 16 in the Golfstat standings.
This year's tournament includes four teams ranked in Golfweek's top-25. In addition to the No. 13 Cavaliers, Duke is No. 3, North Carolina is No. 9 and NC State is No. 21.
Virginia has placed second at the ACCs three times in the eight years the Cavaliers have competed in the championship. UVa was the runner-up in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Altomare and Calle Nielson's second-place showing in 2010 matched Leah Wigger's runner-up finish in 2006 as the best in UVa's history.
Live scoring of the tournament will be on Golfstat.com. Live webstreaming will be available for free on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday on theACC.com.
