Greensboro, N.C. - Virginia senior Brittany Altomare (Shrewsbury, Mass.), the 2013 individual medalist at this year's Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championships, was named the 2013 ACC Women's Golfer of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches.
Altomare was the unanimous choice of the league's nine head coaches for Player of the Year. She becomes the first Virginia player to win the award. She earned medalist honors by shooting a four-over par 217, April 19-21, at the ACC Championship held at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
By virtue of winning the ACC title, Altomare was automatically named to the 2013 All-ACC team. It marked the fourth consecutive year she has earned that honor. She becomes the third Cavalier to receive All-ACC honors four times during their career. Former UVa golfers Leah Wigger (2004-07) and Callie Nielson (2008-11) were also named all-conference four times.
Altomare was joined on the All-ACC squad by sophomore Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.).
Altomare is currently ranked No. 8 in the latest Golfweek individual standings. She leads the Cavaliers with a 72.30 stroke average, which ranks as the lowest single-season stroke average in UVa history. In addition to winning the ACC Championship, she posted five top-three finishes this season. No other ACC golfer had more than two.
Altomare's record against ACC competition was 194-18-4. She finished in the top-15 in eight of nine tournaments this season and was named the ACC's Player of the Month for March.
Mao is second on the UVa roster with a 74.29 stroke average, which ranks as the ninth best in the ACC. She was the medalist at the UCF Challenge, which helped her win ACC Player of the Month honors for February. She is ranked No. 66 in the latest Golfweek standings. During the season she placed in the top-10 in four of eight tournaments.
Virginia will compete at the NCAA East Regional May 9-11 at the Auburn University Club.
