Courtney Swan now leads the ACC in draw controls per game

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 16 Virginia women's lacrosse team (5-6, 0-3 ACC) closes out a two-game homestand by hosting American (4-8, 0-4 Patriot) on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
Virginia is trying to win back-to-back games for the first time this season after logging a 19-8 victory over Old Dominion last Thursday (March 26). American has won two of its last three games, downing Old Dominion, 13-11, and George Mason, 15-3 before getting edged 11-10 by Bucknell last Saturday (March 29).
This will be the third-ever meeting between Virginia and American. Last season, Virginia earned a 16-4 victory in Washington, D.C. The Cavaliers dominated the first half of play, jumping out to a 9-0 halftime lead. In the first 15 minutes of the game, Virginia outshot the Eagles 11-1. The Cavaliers also won the first nine draw controls of the contest. American scored its first goal with 20:59 left in the game. In the first meeting between the two squads, Virginia defeated American, 19-3, in an NCAA Tournament first-round game in Charlottesville in 2003.
Virginia averages 14.1 goals per game while American scores 8.7. UVa is averaging 15.0 draw controls per game with American winning 9.8 per contest. American has 7.6 caused turnovers per game and the Cavaliers 6.9.
Jessic Wojciechowski leads the Eagles in goals at 21. Alex Lugovina is second with 20. Olivia Mangan has a team-high 30 points with 14 goals and 11 assists, including posting five points in the loss to Bucknell. Maher also leads the team in draw controls with 26 and is second with 13 caused turnovers. The goalkeeping tandem of Jackie Ferri and Ashley Dalisera have combined for a .317 save percentage, averaging 5.0 saves per game.
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) scored a career-high five goals against ODU, her sixth four-goal game of the year and her fourth-straight game with at least four points. Blue now leads the team in goals with 34, ranking fifth in the ACC and 11th in the nation. Blue's 3.09 goal-per-game average ranks fourth in the ACC and 21st in the nation. In a streak extending back to last season, Blue has scored a goal in 17-straight games.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored four goals with an assist against ODU, her fourth four-goal game of the year. Swan, who ranks eighth in the ACC and 21st in the nation with 44 points this year, has now logged four or more points in a game seven times this season including her five points against ODU. With her seven draw controls against the Monarchs, Swan moved into the conference lead in draw controls, averaging 5.36 per game, which ranks No. 10 in the country.
On defense, senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) is ranked fifth in the nation and leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 10.0 per contest. Colgan also ranks sixth in the ACC in ground balls per game at 2.0. Senior Lauren Goerz (Danville, Ca,) and junior Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) are tied for seventh in the ACC, averaging 1.09 caused turnovers per game. Goerz also ranks 12th in the ACC in ground balls per game, averaging 1.7.
UVa returns to ACC play on Saturday, April 5 when they play at Notre Dame in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Opening draw is at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live online on ESPN3. The Cavaliers are back at Klöckner Stadium on Thursday, April 10 when they host Boston College for Senior Night when all of the Cavalier fourth-years will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
