GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia rowing graduate student Sarah Cowburn has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Friday (June 21). In addition, the conference announced Cowburn, Constanze Duell, Molly Frear, Susanne Grainger, Chandler Lally, Sarah McGovern and Catherine Multari have been recognized on the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team.
“Sarah has been an exemplary student-athlete for us the past two seasons and this honor is representative of the hard work she has done in and out of the water at UVa,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “In addition, we are very proud of these young women who not only compete at a very high level, but do so well in the classroom.”
Cowburn, a native of Worcestershire, England, is the third consecutive Cavalier rower to be named the ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Jennifer Cromwell (2010) and Sarah Borchelt (2011, 2012).
Cowburn was named a Capital One First-Team Academic All-American as well as Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Second-Team All-American for her efforts in 2013, which included being a part of the UVa Varsity Eight that finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. A CRCA All-South Region First Team selection, Cowburn was a member of the ACC Champion V8 that was named the conference Crew of the Year. A repeat All-ACC Academic honoree, Cowburn was recognized on the All-ACC squad for the second year in a row.
This is Frear and Lally’s second conference honor and the first for Duell, Grainger, McGovern and Multari. Lally was recognized on the 2012 team, while Frear was honored on the 2011 squad. Cowburn, Frear, McGovern and Multari were selected as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes.
Duell (Jr., Oberschleissheim, Germany), Grainger (Sr., London, Ontario) and Lally (So., Bryn Mawr, Pa.) were a part of the V8 along with Cowburn that finished fourth at the national regatta and won the ACC title. Grainger was named to the CRCA All-America Second Team and the CRCA All-South Region First Team.
Frear (Sr., Wilton, Conn.) was the coxswain of the Second Varsity Eight that won the petite final and finished seventh overall at the NCAA regatta, while Multari (Jr., Halifax, Nova Scotia) was part of the Varsity Four that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. McGovern (Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) was coxswain of the ACC Champion Varsity Four.
