CHARLOTTESVILLE - The reigning ACC Champion Virginia women's soccer team announced its 2013 schedule today, which includes 13 home games at Klöckner Stadium and 12 contests against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams.
"This is about as challenging of a schedule as we could hope for this season, which will not only help bring out the best in our team, but should also be extremely exciting for our fans," said head coach Steve Swanson. "We have some great non-conference teams coming to Klöckner in 2013 and when you add an expanded, even stronger ACC, the atmosphere at each and every game should be electric."
Of the 12 NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule, five reached at least the quarterfinals, including reigning NCAA Champion North Carolina, runner-up Penn State and College Cup participant Florida State. Ten of those 12 opponents reached the round of 32 of last year's tournament.
The Cavaliers will open the season by playing all six of their non-conference games at home. The season begins with the inaugural Klöckner Classic, featuring one of the strongest fields of any tournament in the nation this season. The Cavaliers face in-state foe VCU in the season opener on Aug. 23, while traditional powers North Carolina and Santa Clara meet in the first game of the day. Two days later, Virginia plays Santa Clara and North Carolina faces VCU on the second day of the tournament.
Virginia will continue the homestand on Aug. 30 with a doubleheader with the Cavalier men's team. The women play 2012 NCAA runner-up Penn State in the first game, followed by the men's team's season-opener against 2012 NCAA quarterfinalist Louisville.
After the Cavaliers host Richmond on Sept. 1, they conclude the non-conference schedule with the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Sept. 6-8. Virginia plays Rutgers and Seton Hall in this year's event, while William & Mary is the fourth team participating.
The ACC schedule opens on Sept. 12 when the Cavaliers host conference newcomer Syracuse in the ACC debut for the Orange. Virginia's first road trip of the season follows as it visits Boston College, Pittsburgh and Duke. Home games against Maryland, Clemson and Notre Dame precede another three-game road trip, this one to Wake Forest, NC State and North Carolina. The Cavaliers end the regular season by hosting Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech.
The ACC Tournament will be played using the same format as the past two seasons. It begins on Nov. 3 as the top four seeds host quarterfinal games. Those winners will travel to Cary, N.C., for the semifinals and the final the following weekend (Nov. 8-10) at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The NCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 15 and runs through the College Cup, also in Cary, N.C., on Dec. 6-8.
Prior to the season, the Cavaliers play an exhibition game in Maple City, Mich., against Illinois on Aug. 16.
Virginia returns eight starters among 19 returning letterwinners from last year's squad that went 18-5-1 and reached the NCAA round of 16.
