This season marks the 16th time in the past 20 years that the Cavaliers have hosted NCAA Tournament play at Klöckner Stadium. Overall, Virginia has a 21-12-3 record in home NCAA Tournament games.
Virginia is making its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 26th overall appearance. Only North Carolina and Notre Dame have longer active streaks of tournament appearances. Last year Virginia advanced to the round of 16, defeating La Salle and Rutgers before falling to Duke.
The Cavaliers (20-1) are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Their school-record 20-match win streak was snapped with a 4-2 loss to Virginia Tech last week in the ACC Tournament semifinals. Virginia leads the nation in scoring at 3.19 goals per game this season. Junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) leads the ACC in scoring with 38 points and 14 assists, in addition to posting 12 goals. She is one of three Cavaliers to post double-digit goals this season, with sophomore forwards Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Brittany Ratcliffe (Williamstown, N.J.) having 15 and 11 goals respectively.
Saint Francis (13-7-1) is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the Northeast Conference championship. The Red Flash is led by senior forward Tesa McKibben, the nation's leading scorer with 54 points on 20 goals and 14 assists this season. Friday's game will mark the first time Saint Francis has played an ACC school and the Cavaliers are the first top-10 opponent the Red Flash have faced since Penn State in 2001.
Friday's game is the first meeting between the schools. The Cavaliers have played just one NEC opponent before, downing LIU Brooklyn 2-0 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
The winner of the Virginia-Saint Francis game will play either Georgetown or La Salle in the second round on Nov. 22.
