COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Virginia softball team’s rally at Maryland fell short, 6-5, Sunday afternoon (March 24) at Robert E. Taylor Stadium in College Park, Md. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 12-15 (1-5 ACC), while Terrapins improved to 14-16 (3-0 ACC).
Four Cavaliers had multiple hits, including senior Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) with three and juniors Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) and sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) each having two.
After falling behind 6-1 after four innings, the Cavaliers struck for four runs in the fifth. After Bowdren singled and Harris walked, Johnson hit her fourth home run of the season to left-center field. Williams singled to score classmate Lauren Didlake (Bowling Green, Va.) later in the inning to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Cavaliers were able to load the bases in the sixth and move a runner to third in the seventh, but were unable to score against Kaitlyn Schmeiser, who earned the save for Maryland.
Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) threw a complete game with sixth strikeouts and six runs (five earned) in six innings, but took the loss to fall to 9-9 on the season.
Maddie Martin (6-7) picked up the win for Maryland after throwing four innings with four runs allowed.
Up next, the Cavaliers host Boston College in an ACC series March 29-30 at The Park. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, while Saturday’s single game is set for noon.
