CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games at No. 25 North Carolina, 5-1 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 16-18 on the season (3-8 ACC), while the Tar Heels improved to 30-13 (8-3 ACC).

In the top of the first of the first game, sophomore Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) reached third on a Tar Heel throwing error and came home on a single by classmate Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) to give the Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead.

The Tar Heels’ Constance Orr hit a home run to center to tie the game in the second and UNC manufactured two runs in the third on a ground ball by Amber Parrish and an Orr RBI single.

Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) threw a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) with seven strikeouts in the loss (12-10).

North Carolina starter Lori Spingola (20-10) also pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run on seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

In the second game, freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched out of several jams, stranding 14 Tar Heel runners, but North Carolina prevailed, 2-1.

The Cavaliers scored in the first inning when senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) doubled to score Velk. UNC answered in the second inning on a Erin Satterfield RBI single.

Skinkis made several fielding plays to keep the score tied at 1, including all three outs in the third inning.

North Carolina loaded the bases for the third time in the game in the seventh inning and with two outs, pinch hitter Lauren Walker hit a grounder to Skinkis, but junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) was unable to hold on to the throw, allowing Paige Williams to score the winning run.

Chapdelaine pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts. Ashley Bone started for UNC, giving up one run on seven hits. Spingola threw the last three innings for the win, striking out four.

The two teams conclude the series Sunday (April 7) with a single game set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
