CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (17-29) cracked five home runs, tying a single-game school record, in a 7-6 win over Georgetown (11-28) at The Park. The Cavaliers have now won a season-high, three-straight games.
The Cavalier offense got going early and often, blasting four home runs in the first three innings. Junior Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) hit two home runs including a crucial solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Cavaliers a two-run cushion. The Hoyas ended up pulling within a run in the top of the seventh before Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) induced the game-ending groundout with the tying run on second base.
The multi-home run game for Ingraham was the second of her career. Her sixth inning solo shot was her team-leading, eighth home run of the season. She moves into sole possession of eighth place on the Virginia career home run list with 22.
Right behind her on the list is Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who got Virginia on the scoreboard in the top of the first with her seventh home run of the year. She finished the day going 2-for-4 and now has 21 career home runs, the ninth most is school history.
Virginia built a 3-0 advantage on a two-run homer by Olivia Gott (Weston, Fla.) in the bottom of the second. After Georgetown plated two unearned runs in the top half of the third, Ingraham and Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) responded with home runs of their own and put the Cavaliers up 6-2.
Georgetown took advantage of three walks and three wild pitches in a three-run top of the sixth. Osherow re-entered the circle and recorded all three outs in the frame to end the Hoya threat. She was credited with seven innings pitched and retired all 21 batters in the game. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out four Hoyas to earn her 11th win of the season.
ACC play will resume this Saturday (April 22) when the Cavaliers visit Notre Dame for a three-game series in South Bend. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
-Virginia is 2-1 against Georgetown all-time, all three games have been played in Charlottesville.
-This marks the second time the Cavaliers have hit five home runs in a game this season (Elon-2/19).
-The five Virginia home runs were the most ever hit in a single game at home.
-Virginia is seeking its fourth-straight win this weekend, a feat that hasn’t occurred since the 2012 season.
