ATLANTA—The Virginia volleyball team rallied from down a set to defeat Georgia Tech, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 25-13 and 15-12, Friday evening (Nov. 1) at O’Keefe Gymnasium in Atlanta. With the win, the Cavaliers (13-10, 6-5 ACC) have won three consecutive ACC matches for the first time since 2010.
"We didn't play as well as our last two outings, but we grinded and were able to pull out the win," UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said.
The Cavaliers fell behind, 6-2, in the decisive fifth set before going on a 5-1 run to tie the score at 7-7. With the score tied at 11, the Cavaliers used two GT hitting errors and two kills by freshman Haley Kole (Tallahasse, Fla.) to clinch the victory, 15-12.
The win marks the first time since 2008 that UVa has captured three consecutive ACC road wins. The last time the Cavaliers were above .500 in conference play this late in the season was the 2007 season (finished 13-9 in ACC play).
Senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) moved into sole possession of third place on UVa’s all-time digs list with 1,617, while Kole moved up to fifth on Virginia’s freshman kills list with 325 for the season.
The Cavaliers led the Yellow Jackets in hitting .168-.084 and in digs, 77-60, while Georgia Tech held the advantage in blocks, 11-7.
Kole led the Cavaliers with 20 kills, while five UVa players earned 12 or more digs, including junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who recorded double-doubles. Janowski tallied 13 kills and 14 digs, while Fuller added 40 assists and 16 digs.
In the first set, the Cavaliers hit .321 on the way to a 25-17 win, but dropped each of the next two sets, 25-22, after only managing a .042 percentage in the second and third frames.
The Cavaliers came back in the fourth, limiting the Yellow Jackets to a -.100 hitting percentage en route to a 25-13 win.
Jennifer Percy led Georgia Tech with 12 kills.
Virginia returns to action Saturday evening (Nov. 2) at Clemson at 6 p.m.
