BLACKSBURG, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team had its best hitting day in ACC play this season, defeating in-state rival Virginia Tech, 25-15, 30-28, 27-29 and 25-17, Wednesday night (Oct. 23) in Blacksburg. It was the first victory for the Cavaliers (11-10, 4-5 ACC) over the Hokies (17-6, 5-4 ACC) since Sept. 18, 2009. VT had won the previous seven match-ups.
“I thought we were pretty solid right from the get-go,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “I’ve been pretty hard on them since Saturday’s performance against NC State about being better and more disciplined. Tonight, I thought we were very sound and good fundamentally.”
The Cavaliers hit .344, the second-best percentage of the season (.392 against Montana), compared to VT’s .242. Virginia recorded 10.5 blocks to the Hokies’ five.
Both freshman hitters for the Cavaliers, Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.), reached 20 kills in a match for the first time this season. Kole recorded 23 kills on .419 hitting, while Burton hit .500 with 20 kills.
After the Hokies closed the Cavalier lead to 12-11 in the first set, Virginia went on an 8-1 run on the way to a 25-15 win. UVa hit .607 with 18 kills in the frame.
In the second, the Hokies fought off five set points, but a Kole kill followed by a solo block by junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) gave the frame to UVa, 30-28.
The third set also went to extra points, with UVa fighting off three set points and the Hokies coming back once to win, 30-28, on kills by Lindsey Owens and Kathryn Caine.
In the fourth, UVa limited the Hokies to a .125 hitting percentage while hitting .333 en route to a 25-17 win.
Victoria Hamsher led Virginia Tech, hitting .692 with 10 kills.
The Cavaliers return to action Sunday (Oct. 27) when they host new ACC member Notre Dame at 1 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
